When you go to the Sea Otter Classic with a bag of stickers, you always try to get them onto the toolboxes of legendary mechanics. Mission accomplished. In this case it’s Steve “Gravy” Gravenites. Gravy has been a fixture on the pro mountain bike scene for literally as long as there has been a pro mountain bike scene, wrenching for such storied programs as Yeti back in the Missy Giove days, Volvo-Cannondale in its heyday, and of course Schwinn-Toyota (aka the naughtiest team in the history of the sport). These days he spends his time wrenching for Marin Bikes, alternately servicing the race team and managing their in-house service corse, which is just a more French way of saying shop. Gravy is also infamous for undertaking epic, all day rides that take a minimum of 13hrs to complete, in some cases with the assistance of the helpful rangers. As the son of blues legend Nick “The Greek” Gravenites, Steve grew up in a rock & blues family. His mom made costumes for Janis Joplin, who was also one of the family roommates back in the summer of love days. If you’re at Sea Otter be sure to swing by the Marin team booth and get an autograph from this legend, or better yet, have him build you a pr of wheels.
