Staying with the Ritchey theme this week, it’s a little known fact that Ritchey was very involved in the U.S. road scene in the early ‘90’s, and had a bad-ass road team, as well as sponsoring a couple others (more on those soon). That’s right, 10-speed racers. This one came about though a call from Coach Carmichael to yours truly, seeking support for some of his young National Team athletes. After a quick consultation with TR himself, it was on, and here’s what we came up with…L to R: Warren “The Henchman” Sallenbach – Canadian TTT Champ and the most handsome man on the team; Peter Steubenrach – U.S. National Team and smart, really smart; Bobby “Vanilla” Julich – Legit. He got third in the “Le Tour” one year; Eric “Dinker” Harris –Tough guy from Texas, also on the National Team; Chann McRae – Became a legit Euro pro for Mapei and now has a coaching business, and last but not least Tim “Johnny” Rutherford – Johnny was not only a factor in any road event, he was also the cornerstone of Team Ritchey’s then dominant mountain bike team and would become affectionately known as “The Capt’n.” Not pictured but certainly not forgotten is Steve Larsen, aka “The Golden Boy,” may he rest in peace.
